The critique must be a MS Word document, double-spaced, Times New Roman font size 12,
and 3-5 pages in length.
The critique must include the full APA citation for the article.
The critique must be in essay form. It must use the structure set forth in the above “Outline for Research Critiques,” and it should use the criteria as major headings in the paper. It should not be written in bullet points or questions and answers but in the paragraphs of an essay.
Spend the least time on criterion 1.
In preparing your critique, you will use the following outline—which is a composite of many frameworks we have encountered in the past. The outline is built around five broad criteria for evaluating research reports: structure, clarity, execution, logic, and significance. Each of those criteria is fleshed out with a series of specific questions that can guide your thinking as you work your way through the articles. For additional points for you to consider:
Criteria #2 and #3 are the really difficult ones and are worthy of special attention in this course.
All five criteria matter, and a good critique will address them all.
The specific questions take on differing degrees of importance for different articles, and it is
never possible—or desirable—to answer each and every question in a written critique. One
of the more challenging parts of preparing a written critique is deciding what needs to be
emphasized to convey a given article’s principal strengths and weaknesses.
The rubric is attached.
